What's the story with Dutch surnames?

What's the story with Dutch surnames? Cormac Mac Ruairi investigates the origins of family names like Kok, Pekelharing and Smallegange.

On first arriving in the Netherlands, I allowed myself a little smile at the 'quirky Dutch' for having Wim Kok as prime minister. Then on getting my first job here, I was introduced to two of my colleagues, Mr Uittenbroek and Ms Spring in 't Veld.

For the briefest of moments, I wondered if Mr. 'out of his pants' had a thing with Ms. 'jump in the field'. Tantalising! Well, you had to see them to appreciate the picture.

But alas, as quickly as the idea formed in my mind, it was beaten back by the words of my old Irish language teacher in Dublin. 'Foreigners don't have silly names. In fact, foreigners probably think your own name is silly.'

And boy, he made his point loud and clear. A classmate who had the temerity to find Mr O Hay's pronouncement amusing suddenly found himself the victim of a rather robust beating with a crutch (which belonged to a lad named O' Toole who had broken leg at the time).

The shock of the assault imprinted the teacher's words in my mind and consequently laughing at other people's names just isn't an option.

Where it all began

So, what's the story with Dutch surnames? The defining moment came on 18 August 1811 when Napoleon Boneparte - whose French army were occupying the Netherlands - signed a decree establishing a registry of births, deaths and marriages. Families, who until that time had got on just fine without a surname, were suddenly obliged to pick a surname.

It is a common misconception that the Dutch didn't take old 'boney-parts' all that seriously and set about picking silly names like Borst (breast) and Kok anticipating they could drop them as soon as 'nappy' got what was coming to him. It is an interesting theory but why didn't the Dutch follow through on this? Perhaps, after all, the Dutch took their new names seriously.

Genealogist Rick van der Wielen says that traditionally the Dutch used a patronymic system in which the father's first name became the first son's last name, and the other kids got the left over names from the grandfather, great grandfather and so on. Gradually in the 1600, people began to turn the patronymic name into modern surnames - Jan Hendricksen (Jan the son of Hendrick) gave his son the surname Hendricksen instead of Jansen. A suffix was often added to indicate "son of" or "daughter of". (Ex. Jan, son of Hendrick would be written Jan Hendricks, Jan Hendrickse or Jan Hendricksen.).

Women took a feminine form such as "s", "se", "sd", "sdr", and even "sen" which implied the full suffix of "sdochter", meaning "daughter of". (Ex. Jannetje Dirksdr would be Jane, daughter of Dirk.

'But the Dutch, being independently minded, couldn't agree on a single system. For instance one of the sons might use the name Hendricksen, while another might call himself Jansen, with another sibling basing his name on his town of origin and another on his occupation, Brouwer (Brewer),' says van der Wielen.

Incidentally Van der Wielen's own name refers to a pool of water along the coast that remains after the tide goes out and not the Dutch word for wheel.

The Dutch Top Ten

Genealogist Miriam Klaassen says that a combination of unflattering nicknames, patronymic-based names, association with place of origin and references to occupation have become the most popular surnames.

The top 10 surnames include: De Jong (the young), Jansen or Janssen (son of Jan), Bakker (baker), Visser (fisher), Smit (smith) and Meijer/Meyer (land agent).

Van Dijk is another all time favour but boringly enough it refers to the Dutch preoccupation with keeping sea water out of their clogs rather than a reference to the mother's sexual preference.

My personal favourite is Van den/der Berg (from/of the mountain). Now that has got to be a joke.

We can have a giggle about the Dutch first name Pik which seems to relate to the Dutch word for the male organ but we should not lose the run of ourselves. Kok for instance means cook.

In the movie 'meet the parents', Ben Stiller plays a character named Gay Fokker and we are all supposed to laugh. But Fokker (breeder) is a perfectly legitimate surname in the Netherlands. And while we are on the subject, my heart goes out to the Dutch man who proudly announced 'I fok horses' when asked about his occupation during an interview on British television some years back.

So come on, Dutch names are not so weird are all. But if you do have to laugh, be sure there are no Irish teachers brandishing a large crutch in the vicinity.

Field Guide to the Truth Teller: I Cannot Tell a Lie

ECGMA says: Yeah, truth hurts especially when the recipients are close/narrow-minded people. They hear but don't listen. They listen but not hear. They can give but can't take. Their minds are blinded by their own insecurity which leads them to feel their friends and family are against them. It is sad but such negative mindset will lead them to be fearful depression sufferers who in turn will forever blame the 'rest of the world' but themselves.

Field Guide to the Truth Teller: I Cannot Tell a Lie

By Elizabeth Svoboda , published on March 01, 2010

Brandon Mendelson is the definition of a straight shooter. The 26-year-old Web publisher from Glens Falls, NY, isn't afraid to tell people exactly what he thinks. "I think it's a moral imperative to tell people the truth," he says.

"Honesty is the best policy" is no idle aphorism for Mendelson. He's determined to stick to his forthright philosophy even at the risk of losing friendships or jobs. When his former employer—a TV network affiliate—assigned him to cull hundreds of news stories from other publications for possible re-use, Mendelson gradually realized much of his labor was going to waste. "Ninety-nine percent of the stories were never used," he says. He approached his supervisor and aired his opinion point-blank. "I told him, 'What you guys are doing is awful—it needs to be fixed,'" Mendelson remembers.

The boss brushed him off, but a higher-level supervisor at the company called, said he'd heard about Mendelson's concerns, and asked for his suggestions on making the story-selection system better. Mendelson admits his policy of radical honesty hasn't always yielded such happy results. "I'm not exactly Mr. Sensitivity. I've cost myself quite a few jobs by telling people what I thought." Like the time he told the hiring committee of a local chamber of commerce they were doing everything wrong.

Though most kids are reared on maxims like "Never tell a lie," people who commit to total honesty in every situation are a rarity. Many of us lie to some degree, typically to avoid provoking conflict in relationships. "People don't want to hear the unvarnished truth—we're putting on weight, the new dress we bought looks terrible," says Robert Feldman, a University of Massachusetts psychologist who studies deception. "So we learn that it's appropriate to withhold the truth sometimes." Similarly, many people fudge details about their lives ("I wasn't just sitting on the couch. I applied for three jobs today!") to duck the discomfort that comes with not meeting others' expectations.

Truth tellers, however, are committed to honesty regardless of the social repercussions. After Mendelson started a band with some friends several years ago, he confronted them about their failure to pull their weight in promoting the band. "They were slacking. At one concert, I was working the door, I was emceeing, and they were just hanging out. I told them, 'This is B.S.'" The other band members didn't react well to his candor. "I haven't really talked to any of those people since then," he says.

Most religious and philosophical traditions include some version of "Thou shalt not bear false witness," and Mendelson aims to follow that dictate to the letter. "Telling the truth helps me sleep at night with a clear conscience," he says. But some social scientists believe lying isn't a universal ethical faux pas—it depends on the situation at hand. "People who tell lies are very oriented to other people and what they think," says Bella DePaulo, a psychologist at the University of California at Santa Barbara. Telling "appropriate lies"—like the time you told Aunt Erma you loved the chartreuse pantsuit she got you for the holidays—isn't a sign that you're morally bankrupt. It's a sign you're attuned to her feelings.

Shading the truth has its share of social advantages, so why do a few rare individuals insist on honesty at all costs? In some cases, straight shooters may be a product of the family environment they were raised in, says Victoria Talwar, a developmental psychologist at McGill University in Montreal. In a study examining children's moral development, Talwar found that parents who do not talk about the importance of preserving other people's feelings are likely to raise offspring with a blunt relational style.

Mendelson, however, says his penchant for honesty evolved as a result of a teenage prank that got a little out of hand. "In high school, I made a Web site making fun of everyone at the school—it had a top-10 list of jerks and some funny audio." After word of the site leaked out all over the school, Mendelson eventually decided to admit he was responsible. That experience made him realize it was simplest to stand behind what he believed was true, he says. "I knew I couldn't stay under the radar, so from that point, I decided just to tell the truth about everything."

Many truth tellers opt for honesty because lying seems too complicated or makes them too anxious. Liars have to remember to keep their false stories straight. A University of Portsmouth study found that liars usually pause more often in their speech, for example, and some people blush profusely when they lie. Being a blunt truth teller, on the other hand, "is really easy," Talwar says. "You just tell it as it is."

In some cases, truth telling may be a byproduct of the way the brain is structured. People with Asperger's syndrome, for example, are extremely forthright because they have a limited capacity to understand the social repercussions of their blunt honesty. "My mother had Asperger's, and she literally could not tell a lie," says Ellen Snortland, a writer and producer in Los Angeles. "After my father died, I asked her, 'Do you ever miss Dad?' She said, 'Nope, I'm glad he's dead.' She didn't say it with malice. It was merely true for her."

Not all truth tellers are scrupulous or socially naive, however; some of them use the truth as a kind of sophisticated bludgeon. "It can be almost a holier-than-thou thing," DePaulo says. "Sometimes people use honesty as an excuse to hurt others. They say something nasty and then say, 'Well, I'm just being honest.'"

"As Emily Dickinson said, 'Tell the truth, but tell it slant,'" DePaulo says. "You can convey what you really mean without being hurtful." But Mendelson's not a big fan of the "tell it slant" approach. The possibility that he might offend a few people doesn't scare him. "I want to tell 100 percent absolute truth, or else I'm wasting my time," he says. "Being able to give people a straight, honest answer is a gift."

Tell the Truth—Tactfully
Adopting a straightforward attitude can change your life and relationships for the better—as long as you use the truth wisely.

Weigh the specifics.
Ask yourself whether telling the truth has real potential to improve a less-than-ideal situation. If someone you know is engaging in self-destructive behavior, for instance, airing your opinions might be more helpful in the long run. On the other hand, if you detest people on your team at work but know there's little chance of getting reassigned, it's probably best to keep mum.

Zero in on the other person's motive and address it. If an acquaintance blindsides you with an inquiry like "I'm your best friend, aren't I?", don't resort to the quick fix of telling a lie. Instead, parry with a reply that teases out the questioner's true intent: "Are you feeling lonely these days? Should we get together more often?"

Tell the truth to build rapport.
Should you confide to a friend that you've had plastic surgery or that you once lusted after your ninth-grade science teacher? You don't have to, of course, but DePaulo says people willing to disclose slightly embarrassing truths are likely to have deeper, more intimate personal relationships.

Is Chatting Cheating?

Is Chatting Cheating?

By Aaron Ben-Zeév, Ph.D. on September 5, 2008 - 7:40pm

"A man can have two, maybe three love affairs while he's married. After that it's cheating." Yves Montand

Online sexual activity involves various types of activities, such as viewing explicitly sexual materials, participating in an exchange of ideas about sex, exchanging sexual messages, and online social interactions with at least one other person with the intention of becoming sexually aroused.

In a stimulating paper entitled "Chatting is not cheating," John Portmann defends online lust and characterizes cybersex as talk about sex; he maintains that such talking is more similar to flirting than to having sex. The issue of online cheating is, however, more complex-especially when it concerns those types of sexual activities involving social interaction with other individuals.

People consider their online sexual relationships as real, as they experience psychological states similar to those typically elicited by offline relationships. Accordingly, cybersex is not merely a conversation about sex, but is a form of sexual encounter itself; it involves experiences typical of sexual encounters, such as masturbation, sexual arousal, satisfaction, and orgasm. Indeed, people consider cybersex to have a high degree of psychological reality. However, many of them do not consider it to be morally real-at least not as real as offline affairs. One survey found that over 60 percent of people having cybersex do not consider it to be infidelity. Many of them believe cybersex to be similar to pornography; it is an extension of fantasy, keeping them from physically being with other people. Consider the following statement from a 41-year-old married man: "My wife doesn't care if I have relationships (even sexual) on the Internet. It's like it's not real. I can get away with it. But I'm sure she'd get upset if we were to meet for a drink or something" (all citations are from Love Online).

Some people even consider cybersex as a means not to cheat-it is something that may add spice to their offline relationship. These people believe that if they do not know the real name of their cybermate and never actually see them, their affair cannot be regarded as real from a moral point of view; it should be considered as not any different from reading a novel or other kind of mere entertainment-a way to play out fantasies in a safe environment.

Other people admit that cybersex done without the knowledge of the other partner is cheating as it involves deception; nevertheless this is a type of positive cheating: "having cybersex with someone other than one's spouse IS cheating, but it's OKAY cheating." In some circumstances cybersex may help a person through rough periods in an offline, loving relationship. In such circumstances, cybersex may be recommendable, but can still be regarded as cheating. As a 29-year-old married woman, who often engages in cybersex, says: "People need to ultimately and consistently remind themselves that 99% of fantasy is WAY better than the actual reality." When people feel trapped by their current circumstances, but they still do not want to ruin everything around them, cyberspace may offer a parallel world in which things are better. Being in that world can help them preserve the actual one, while not giving up exciting emotional experiences. Living within the two worlds is not easy and may become risky when people do not realize the limitations of each world.

Whereas people having online affairs tend to reduce their problematic nature, their offline partners often do not see any difference between online and offline affairs: the lack of physical contact and face-to-face meetings does not diminish the sense of violation of their vow of exclusivity. The fact that most of these affairs are concealed from the offline spouse is indicative of such possible harm. Consider the following reaction of Melissa: "I glanced at the screen and was shocked to find John talking to some woman about how he'd like to throw her on the bed and make wild, passionate love to her. I was furious and hurt. We had quite a blow up about it." A similar attitude is expressed in the following message: "I recently found a love letter my husband sent to a woman via email. I know there has been no physical contact because she lives across the country, but I still feel betrayed, humiliated, and hurt."

At the heart of moral harm is the harm we impose upon other people. Just as casual sex is not inherently harmful, neither are online affairs. They may be so, when participants are also involved in another primary offline relationship. In this regard, the following aspects are particularly significant: (a) the resources invested in such affairs are taken from the primary relationship, (b) the wish to actualize online relationship is intense, and (c) the degree of intimacy in online affairs is high. All these worries are genuine and can be found in many online relationships.

One way of reducing the weight of these difficulties is to distance the online affair from offline circumstances; for example, by refraining from exchanging personal, actual details or by having other types of limitation upon the online affair. Thus, people may agree not to develop a profound relationship, permitting themselves only a virtual one-night stand, or an uncommitted affair, or promising to tell each other about each online affair. As one woman in a committed relationship remarks about her online sexual affairs: "I've had this discussion with my boyfriend and we both agree that as long as it's not with the same person more than twice, it is really masturbation. It's like reading an erotic story and masturbating to it. I think, however, if you do it with the same person more than once there is a risk of getting attached to them." However, the above types of limitations are extremely difficult to obey, as online boundaries are less constant and less rigid.

Generally, online affairs are easier to perform and put the agent in a less vulnerable position, as the chances of getting caught or being hurt in other ways are considerably reduced. They are also perceived to involve a lesser degree of betrayal as they involve more imaginary elements and the degree of neglecting the partner's interests may also be lesser. The private nature of online affairs may make them less painful for the betrayed partner as well. Moreover, when online affairs are revealed to the significant other, which is done more often than in offline circumstances, it cannot be considered as cheating.

Nevertheless, since online affairs are psychologically real they often cause actual harm to the primary, offline romantic relationships. Accordingly, people are likely to be just as disturbed about their partner's online sexual affairs as they would be if they discovered that their spouse was exchanging steamy love letters with someone else. Since people do not consider online affairs as mere fantasy or as mere interactions with an anonymous series of computer links, such affairs are highly emotional and can be harmful.

When the Other Woman Is an iPhone

By Tyger Latham, Psy.D. on April 13, 2011 - 5:10am

Not too long ago, NPR did a series profiling couples and the impact technology has had on their marriages.  Technology has revolutionized the way we meet and connect with others.  In today's society, it is not unheard of for people to meet their future spouses online.  Furthermore, electronic communication makes staying in touch easier than in times past.  Gone are the days when you waited by the phone for that special person to call you back.  Now, you can shoot off an email or leave a voicemail message and trust that the other person will respond almost instantaneously (assuming he or she is actually interested).

While technology has revolutionized how we communicate with one another, marriage counselors are starting to hear about issues that can emerge.  Tara Fritsch, a marriage counselor in Edmond, OK, comments that while the digital age is not responsible for communication problems in marriages, "it does give us a more convenient means of checking out [of our marriages]."  Edward Hallowell, a psychiatrist and co-author of Married to Distraction, adds that intimacy depends upon the "rapidly disappearing phenomenon of undivided attention spread over time."

Ironically, social media sites like Facebook, which have been known for bringing couples together, can also lead to infidelity in relationships.  To be clear, technology does not break-up couples.  People are ultimately responsible for their own fidelity, however, technology can certainly facilitate opportunities for extra-marital affairs.  In a matter of minutes, one can connect with an old flame or find a date on one of the dozens of dating sites available online.

In the past, if a person was romantically interested in someone outside of their marriage, there were a number of  mechanisms in place that might serve as a barrier to starting an affair.  Now, one can carry on an extra-marital affair clandestinely without one's partner ever knowing.  True, there are frequently signs a person is having an affair, but with little effort, electronic communications can easily be deleted, thereby destroying the paper trail that decades ago would have been more difficult to hide.

As sad as it is to think about, a person can easily carry on an extramarital affair with their spouse in the same room!  I once had a client who had difficulty trusting his fiance because of a history of previous infidelity (Note: Specific identifying information has been changed to maintain this client's anonymity).  He would become noticeably anxious whenever she began to text.  In an attempt to assuage his fears, at such times, my client would start to borage his fiance with questions about her intentions.  He was even inclined from time to time to rummage through her purse when she stepped out of the room in order to check the content of her most recent texts.  Understandably, this client's paranoia caused his fiance to become resentful and his inability to trust her seriously threatened the stability of their relationship.

Even if one partner is not carrying on a physical affair with another person, the prolific use of cell phones within a relationship can give the perception of being "checked out."  How many times have we been out to dinner and seen that couple next to us - he's frenetically typing away on his Blackberry, while she looks off into space, clearly feeling bored and invisible.  It is a pathetic image but one that sadly is becoming more and more common.

So what is a couple to do?  Clearly, technology is not going anywhere, however, there are some simple steps all couples can take to minimize the potential pitfalls that derive from technology.  The first step is a simple one: Put down your cell phone and talk with your partner!  Obviously, we are social creatures and have a need to remain connected, however, in a committed relationship such as a marriage, there is a certain level of respect and consideration that needs to be maintained.  Frisch questions couples she works with, "If your boss approached you and wanted to have a conversation with you, would you continue to surf the internet?"  The answer is probably not.  You would likely show your boss the courtesy of looking  away from your computer screen when s/he was talking to you.  This same amount of respect needs to be afforded to your partner.

Putting down the iPhone, however, is just the beginning.  It is important to take active steps to "unplug" and re-engage your relationships, be they romantic or otherwise.  I recommend that busy, overly connected couples consider putting concrete rules in place to ensure that quality time is preserved in their relationship.  Just as "You should never go to bed angry," so, too, "You should never go to bed with your cell phone or laptop."  Implement certain times during the evening and on weekends when you and your partner will be permitted to use electronic devises and stick to those boundaries.  Frankly, unless you are a doctor on-call or a professional expecting an important call from the office, you should seriously consider leaving your cell phone or Blackberry at home when you go out on a date.  At the very least, put your mobile device on silence and restrict your usage.  There is really nothing more disrespectful than a person who constantly checks their phone when in the presence of others.  Whether intended or not, such behavior sends a message that the person who's company you are in is not as important as that email you are choosing to respond to.

It really is quite simple - if you are committed to your marriage, you need to break-off your love affair with your iPhone.

Mother apologizes on Facebook, kills herself and children

By Emil Protalinski | April 15, 2011, 12:01pm PDT

LaShanda Armstrong left a chilling goodbye message on Facebook earlier this week. Minutes later, she drove her minivan into the Hudson River, drowning herself, her 5-year-old son Lance, her 2-year-old son Landon, and her 11-month-old daughter Laianna.

"I'm so sorry everyone forgive me please for what I'm gonna do…. This Is It!!!!" the message read. LaShanda posted the status update on her Facebook page at 7:13 PM on Tuesday from her BlackBerry, according to CBS.

Her fourth child, 10-year-old LaShaun, was also in the van but was able to escape through a window. The lone survivor swam to shore and flagged down a passing car, giving the driver a disturbing account of what had just happened. Yesterday, the 10-year-old went to play as his family tried to keep his mind off the utter horror of Tuesday night.

"Shaun is great, he's coming along," said Angela Gilliam, LaShanda's aunt. "He's doing very good but he's mentioned it, about he will never forget the incident, what happened. And he wishes that he could have told his brothers how to swim," said the boy's great grandmother Pearl Posey.

Police confirmed LaShanda loaded her four children into the family minivan Tuesday night and intentionally drove it into the Hudson River. "Before she went into the water, she managed to get into the backseat and held all the kids at once and said, 'If we're going to die, we're going to die together'," said Good Samaritan Meave Ryan.

LaShanda's relatives say she was suffering from paranoia before the tragedy. "She was talking to me about how she felt someone was watching her, she felt like there was pages of her diary missing the lights in her house were flickering on and off," said Darice Armstrong, LaShanda's sister.

"I'm still hurting. I will be forever hurting for the rest of my life," said Datrice Armstrong, LaShanda's mother. "I can't hear nothing no more from them. I can't see them no more. I can't hold them no more. I can't do none of that. Question is we'll never know or understand why, but all I'm just saying is just pray with us while we go through this difficult time."

The thing is these girls are also found here in Nairobi, Kenya.. involved in prostitution rackets run by fellow chinese ... i got friends who are working with the chinese christian missions to try and rehabilitate these girls/women, but it's a drop in the ocean.. the exploitation by the chinese 'snakeheads' and 'ex-pros' of naive chinese girls/women will continue

Chinese will always climb on top of one another to survive, it's the evolutionary race game

well, i don't think u need to close this thread and sweep the whole sordid business under the carpet.

it's better to open up the issue to the chinese folks in China so that they know EXACTLY what they are doing when they raise money for these snakeheads to smuggle their daughter, or cousin or niece or granddaughter to the West. These poor girls are likely to prostitute their life away... did u read that one girl confessed to having had sex with over 7000 men since she went over to Britain as a teen?

the Eastern Europeans (particularly Russian women) are also being tempted by money to move to the West and end up in prostitution.... this is such a chronic problem now that to tackle this image problem they have issued Euro banknotes embellished with prostitutes as a way to warn them about how their lives would end up on the streets of western capitals...here's the article...

If u were a chinese girl with only the hope of earning less than $2 a day as wages in China, would u try to leave your town or city to try and make it in the West? Would u like pester your folks to raise the funds to the snakeheads to smuggle you abroad? Would u still gamble on it even though you know you could end up being a prostitute in these chinese run brothels??

I think China should make a documentary of these girls and their slave masters so that the youth could open their eyes to the reality of dreams in the west or africa!
millersdude
Prostitution is a global-wide problem. One out of three girls in Japan prostitute themselves for money to buy material things. Russian girls are being lured to other nations and then treated as sex slaves. 300,000 teens in USA are now selling their bodies on the highways, streets, motels, hotels, clubs and bars. It is nothing new.

Even Rich people do this, the only way to stop this is to have very strong punishment like getting shot without trial.

NOTHING new. Is not like china is the only nation shipping women out to be prositudes. Everyone got their own problems. Beside, isnt sex workers mean around for ages? These women obviously are from the villages, with little to no education, and no manual labour jobs. Which is why they went for this sex worker job. One of the lowest job u can get.

Even when china has reach 1 billion people inside the middle class range, there will still be thousands of high school drop out every year. These woman will be treated as sex workers, and man will be taken into gangs. It arent going to change in the near future. And if places like britian or west africa can pay better, then snake head will arrange woman to be transfer to these places.

But I will say this: this ariticle focus on China, and make it sound like we are the only nation that does this , when in realiaty all nations are doing this. So, I think there is a little bit of bias elements.

Yeah, but the nations that are trafficking their women out to the west or africa for sex trade aren't exactly having all that trillions of dollars in reserves, we know Eastern European and Sub-saharan african countries are shipping them out to the west by the truckloads too.

But they aren't exactly the nation that spent billions on the last Olympic Games... not all the girls came from villages, many came from towns with access to education.

China is a different league altogether, it's rural populations are exactly starving or suffering drought/famine/economic stagnancy etc...

It's time their government do something to educate their womenfolk!

Btw, some of u folks seem to think getting into prostitution in africa is a worse fate than the west. Stinks of racism..

Prostitution will always exist but that does not mean we cant do our best. There is prostitution in first world countries as well but at least we dont see their women arriving by the dozens in containers, as a matter of fact who knows how many of these Fujian women would rather be a prostitute in the west than a pair of cheap hands in China. The question is, the western media is stupid to think they can offend me with these articles; I take their criticism as a favour, thanks for pointing out our problems - us particulary. I guess you're more concerned about our moral integrity and social welfare than other's, because prostitution is unworthy of China and that is because we are better than you. Thank you biggrin.gif

Oh gimme a fu-king break. Do you see Swedish women being trafficed to Africa as sex workers? How about Italian women? French women? German women? What about Irish women? Even the Irish, known as "the blacks of Europe" will not stoop to sell their women to Africa for sex! Even the Dutch, who are known for their relaxed attitudes towards sex will never, ever sell their women to fu-king AFRICA as sex slaves. You know why? It is because these women from European countries have value. Their society honors them and protects them, and this reflects well on their society.

You can judge a society by how their women are perceived. White women in Europe are at the fu-king top of the totem pole. White women are on the cover of fashion magazine everywhere you go in America and Asia, they are seen as the beauty standard. Some European hookers in Amsterdam and Russia won't even fu-k a Chinese man even if he has tons of cash, you want to know why? Because they can afford not to. Asian women, on the other hand are perceived cheap and easily attained. Any middle aged, balding white man can have an Asian woman if he goes to Thailand and China. And now, thanks to your heroes the snakeheads, any ugly, aids-infested black man can have one too.

You can keep your nose in the air all you want, but the truth of it is, no one will respect China and Chinese men as long as our women are seen as so cheap and worthless! Get that through your thick skull and stop pretending there isn't a problem. Chinese men will always be seen as weak because we can't even stop our women from being exploited. Stop acting like "all nations" treat their women like garbage, because that simply isn't true. Do you honestly think a German man would react like you? How about an Irish man? Hell no! A German or Irishman would rather DIE than send his women to fu-king Africa as a sex slave!

Do you know prostitution in Germany, France, Italy and Ireland is legal and widespread? Thus they don't have the human traffic and the "exploit" problems organized by criminals. They don't sell their women to Africa because the relatively low living standard in Africa don't really justify the rewards of their actions. Do you know the British sell their women to Chinese in the early 1900 for money? Japan red light districts now has a lot of sex workers from England, USA, France and other places. In China, my friends have seen a lot white European hookers working with their Chinese pimps in hotels and bars. In the prostitution business, there is no honor and money is everything. Sex workers don't really view their customers as real human beings. They view them as commodity bought and sold.

U are wrong, ur rasist attitude blind u from the truth. EU women wont go to africa for sex slaves because the moeny is not worth it. Chinese women wouldnt go to africa if africa has noone that can pay more money to buy sex from them. Why do u think there are people in africa who can aford to buy sex? Because of chinese projects in africa. The CCP sent PLA, engineers, workers, medics, tecnicaian. Like it or not, the chinese women who are in africa right now, are prolly serving the chinese workers, and the PLA. Not african.

2nd, like some in here have point out, prositution is pretty much legal in EU, and largely adnored in the US. And, yes, in occasion, many "white" women are shiped to Asia to work as sex worker. The money is there, then the people will go there. But since the market for white prositudes can only be advertise as high -end hooker, therefore right now, you can only buy sex from these white women in "5 stars" brothel. I havent been there, but such brothel are well documented.

Regrading your last comments of chinese women acting like cheat whore, these are my logical and appropreate responds:

1)U cant tell the differences in asian. U wont know who is chinese women, who is namer
2)Even if u do tell, there are 700+ million chinese women world wide. The ones u met in the west does not and well not justified for all
3) Even if they all do act like sex slaves, or passive whores, who are u to say thats wrong. U are not god, u cant women acting in a passive way is wrong. U can disagree with such behaviour but u are noone to say its wrong.
4)Lastly, Ur comments are illogical. U link the behavour of a few women to support ur claim that the man of the same race as weak. Not only does ur comment viloate the laws of statistic, it violate the human behaviour in social community in which man and woman are suppose to act differently.

PS: it is the white econmies that are in trouble. I would laugh so hard when ur so call white women are migrating to asia to meet asian man because ur econmy collaspe and can no longer provide a sence of security for ur women.

Some perhaps, but certainly not all. The tragedy is many of the girls are being lied to, travel thousands of miles in terrible conditions for a dream, only to find instead they have been lured into a nightmare.

"Some as young as 11, they arrive without passports or visas, some claiming asylum at British airports, having paid traffickers thousands of pounds for their transit. Once here, they vanish from the hostels or foster care to which they have been assigned by the immigration authorities, often ending up in brothels run from suburban flats and houses."

Well is the same answer over and over to adress social problems: 1)improve econmy to improve income, 2)Improve education, 3)Improve culture and moral.... etc etc

But those solutions takes time in terms of decades, maybe even centries... Moreover, it is hard to achieve 100% and completely get rid of prositution in any countries. There will always be people who want to buy, and there will always be high school drop out who are willing to sell.

U are right that I am overly nationalistc.

But, I dare argue that many comments and the aritcle itself is also bias because it only adress this isusse in China, when in reality it is a gobal problem. I further argue, that for alot of these girls, sex worker is prolly one of the few jobs available to them. Therefore I will not conderm them for being a sex worker. The same way that I do not condamn farmers, or factory workers because even thought these are low income jobs, they are still a job.

Lastly I believe there there are no short term solution. I do not believe that within a few years you can stop, or decrease sex workers in China or oversea chinese sex workers.

Like I said, if people buy, then people will sell.

Untimately, only when we evovle to a point where we have absolute control over the urge for sex, can prositution be truely forbidden. But thats, a biological problem, not a political problems, or a social problem.

You seem to be mixing up women who knowingly enter prostitution through choice, and women sometimes children who pay to travel thousands of miles for a better life, only to find that they have been lied to and are actually being shipped without their knowledge to be sex workers. Those "helping" them are actually shipping them abroad into a life of prostitution from which they cannot escape and from which they did not want or ask for.

Men (and women) are making a fortune by shipping innocent women into a life of misery, where their innocence and self respect will be destroyed all so traffickers can make money.

I have seen plenty of similar articles on Eastern European women. The articles are not written to belittle Eastern Europe (or in this case China) but to highlight a problem that is upsetting to many of the newspapers readers. In the UK the highlighting of these problems (through articles such as this one) raises the public awareness, which means the UK police are inclined to take a more active role in trying to break people smugling gangs (some of which have been broken).

One of the posters against prostitution put up by Sevilla City Hall - Photo EFE

Sevilla City Hall has started a poster campaign to try to get local men to abandon the practice of paying for sex.

Spaniards spend 50 million € a day on prostitutes according to latest estimates with Andaucía the region of the country with most prostitutes in Spain, followed by Valencia and Madrid.
The southern region has no fewer than 18,200 involved in the oldest profession of the world according to the official numbers.

Official estimates say that there are just over 100,000 prostitutes in the country, while some other estimates have tripled that number. Many studies indicate that 6% of the population are regular users of prostitutes and that the industry moves some 18 billion € a year, based mostly in roadside 'alternative' night clubs. These venues are 'inspected' on a periodic basis by the Guardia Civil and it is from these inspections that a rough official number is obtained.

Prostitution is considered is second most profitable business in the world, behind only arms trafficking, but ahead of drugs.

In Sevilla the City Hall has started a poster campaign against prostitution with the slogan 'Are you worth so little that you have to pay? – Prostitution exists because you do pay.

i agree with mkfk1, this is a global problem, not just China.

despite the government heavily punish those who found guilty (dead sentence), thats why these snakehead forces to work in other foreign country. instead of making this a China issue like how the OP did. pathetic.

we should focus on how to stop this human trafficking. what China government can do to limit?

1. call the other nations to cooperate, if they see a china prostitutes, arrest them and send them back to China. and crackdown on those snakeheads.

2. there are only 3 ways these snakehead can send massive people to other country, through air, by land, or sea. china must monitor all boarders.. how these snakeheads can transfer massive prostitutes without notice is unforgivable.

3. needs to develop quick. once China fully developed, there will be less poor, naive girls falling for victim.

btw, i think this thread should be close or move out of China Chat.
